Chalk Painting

A fun outdoor Art activity my students love is “Chalk Painting.” All you need is sidewalk chalk, cups for water, large paint brushes and a big paved outdoor area. After drawing designs with chalk, color the objects with a thick layer (to create lots of chalk powder,) then, use water to “paint” the designs. The water mixes with the chalk powder to make paint. Younger students love this, and for older students, you can teach higher-level skills like blending, color mixing and using layers to create detail and texture. This project works well on sidewalk or asphalt surfaces and is easily adaptable to six-foot social distancing practices.
